Have you ever heard of a product that’s so great it sells itself? I feel confident in saying that those of us that work with independent inventors for a living have heard it countless times. In fact, I heard it just today!
It was from an inventor, who is excited and eager, as he rightfully should be, who believes his new product will capture the attention of the entire marketplace and sell like proverbial hotcakes. His idea is so good, “it will sell itself” were his exact words.
But what if I told you, there is no such thing as a product that sells itself?
Not convinced?
Do you know what the most recognizable word in the entire world is? It’s the word, OK. And the second most recognizable word in the entire world? It’s Coca-Cola. Yep…the soda pop.
Did you know?
• Over 1.9 billion Coke products are served every day.
• 3.1% of ALL beverages consumed are a Coke product.
• 94% of the world can recognize the Coca-Cola logo.
• 10,000 to 20,000 cokes are consumed every second.
• With a brand worth of $100 billion Coca-Cola is more valuable than Budweiser, Starbucks, Pepsi and Red Bull combined.
• There are 30 or so non-alcoholic beverages with sales over a billion dollars annually. Coke owns 20 of them.
• The Coca-Cola Facebook page has more than 109 million followers.
• By some calculations, The Coca-Cola Company is the 84th largest economy in the world.
Why do I bring this all up? Because if there was a product that could sell itself, it would be Coca-Cola…and yet they spend over $4 Billion a year on marketing.
Write this down – There is no such thing as a product that sells itself. If you don’t market it, if you don’t tell the consumer it exists, no one is going to buy it. How could they?
