Tip of the Week: Tip #15 of 25

Tip 15 – “Moving forward with your invention!”
Blog By Edward Ayres

You’ve done your homework. Your invention has been documented, researched and can be cost effectively manufactured. There’s a large target market and you’re confident your product has the Wow Factor necessary to get consumers to spend their money. You’ve set your goal and now you’re ready to proceed. What do you do now?

I recommend to start critically thinking about the type of invention assistance you’ll need in order to achieve invention success. I think it’s very important for independent inventors, who typically have jobs, families, and responsibilities, to realize a trusted team of advisors and service providers can be extremely beneficial. As Magic Johnson said, “When you are a successful business person, you are only as good as your team. No one can do every deal alone.”

Remember your goal when considering the type of professionals you’ll need assistance from. In previous blogs, we’ve recommend that independent inventors set their goal as a licensing agreement for their invention. To pursue a licensing agreement you may need patent attorneys, market research specialist, graphic designers, negotiators and others industry professionals.

When deciding on the professional assistance you’ll utilize there is some important criteria to keep in mind. First, you want professionals who will always tell you what you need to hear, and never what you want to hear. There’s risk in introducing a new invention to the marketplace, and there’s no guarantees of success. If anyone tells you differently, they may not have your best interest in mind. Due to the uncertainties of invention promotion the professionals you hire need to be extremely competent, produce quality work that is fairly priced, and provide regular feedback. Those attributes will be great assets on your road to invention success.

One last point about your team, you have to be on it. All inventors need to take an active role in the success of their invention. You can’t just pay someone and then wait for the “you made it phone call.” You can delegate a lot of the work so this journey does not consume 100% of your time but you do need be involved.
